Locations

Our labs are located both at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)  in Gaithersburg, Maryland; and also the University of Maryland (UMd) in College Park, Maryland.  Please see the individual sections below depending on which location you are visiting.  Spielman’s mailing address and contact information at each location is:

NIST

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, a suburb of Washington D.C, about 25 miles from the city center.

Airports: NIST offers easy access from three arports: Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), Washington Dulles International (IAD), and Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA).

Shuttle Service: Super Shuttle (1-800-258-3826) offers commercial van service from Baltimore-Washington International, Dulles International, and Ronald Reagan Washington National airports to the Gaithersburg area. Call for reservations.

Rail Service: The Washington Metro system has subway service to Gaithersburg and can be boarded at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Take the Yellow Line train marked “Mount Vernon Square” to Gallery Place and transfer to the Red Line train marked “Shady Grove” to the Shady Grove station in Gaithersburg. Service is every six to fifteen minutes, depending on the time of day. Travel time from Ronald Reagan Washington to Shady Grove is approximately 50 minutes.

NIST Shuttle Service: A NIST shuttle van (301-975-5922) operates for official visitors and conference attendees from the Shady Grove Metro station to NIST. The van leaves the Shady Grove station on the quarter and three-quarter hour (e.g., 8:15, 8:45, …, 5:45, 6:00) from the east side parking lot.

Driving Directions to NIST:
From northbound I-270: take Exit 10, Route 117 West, Clopper Road. At the first light, turn right off the exit. At the next traffic light on Clopper Road, turn left onto the NIST grounds.
From southbound I-270: Take Exit 11, Route 124 West, Montgomery Village Avenue/Quince Orchard Road. Bear right at the first light onto Quince Orchard Road. At the second light, turn left onto Route 117, Clopper Rd. At the next light, turn right onto the NIST grounds.

Access:  Visitors without a current visitors pass must enter the campus via the main “A” gate and stop by the Visitor’s center to obtain a visitors pass. To obtain such a pass you must have contacted us in advance. From there, our offices and labs are located in Bldg. 216, shared with the “Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology.” Spielman’s office is B139. Click on the following map for more detail.

UMd

UMd is located in College Park, MD, an urban outlier of Washington, D.C.  On the following map,  note the location of the parking (either the Regents Garage, or the Paint Brach lot): parking at UMd is very strictly enforced, so please locate the visitor parking and use the suitable pay stations.  Our labs and offices are located in the Computer and Space Sciences (CSS) building, and the adjoining Physical Sciences Complex (PSC).  Spielman’s office is 2153 in the PSC.
